driving license. This requirement is common for all 50 US states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have kept the time to drive as 2 months for states that do not have any out of country license time defined explicitly with no reference link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">International License Issues<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transation to English<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your license is in your local language, then you should either get the <strong>international<\/strong> driving license in English or have the English translation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The translation document should have your photograph too. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/files\/documents\/2018\/11\/26\/LIC114%20-%20Translation%20into%20English%20of%20a%20Foreign%20Driver%20License_1118.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sample form for driving license in English translation<\/a> has been given by Massachusetts DMV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some states like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dps.texas.gov\/DriverLicense\/movingtotexas.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Texas accept foreign licenses in Spanish<\/a> but I still recommend getting English translation. You can contact your consulate or embassy to translate the information on the driver&#8217;s license prior to arriving in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Traffic Ticket<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are stopped by police and you are using your international driving license, then, there is no way of adding the ticket to your name by a police officer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will probably just let you go by issuing a warning if it is a regular offense of minor speeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can be arrested and fined if you jumped the red signal or hit someone badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Driving History &amp; Insurance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I strongly recommend getting a US driving license as soon as possible and preferably immediately after you <a href=\"https:\/\/am22tech.com\/life-in-usa-guide-for-newcomer\/\">land in America to start working on H1B or L work visa<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting a US driving license helps you make your driving history which will help reduce your <a href=\"https:\/\/am22tech.com\/car-insurance-in-usa\/\">auto insurance premium<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may not be eligible to apply for a US driving license with a B1\/B2 temporary short term visit visa though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rental Car<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rental car companies like Budget, Avis, or Enterprise will easily rent you a car without a US driving license. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people visiting the USA on temporary <a href=\"https:\/\/am22tech.com\/apply-visitor-visa-b1-b2-family-friend\/\">business visits on B1\/B2 visa<\/a> have rented the car just by showing the Indian, Europian, Japanese, and other driving licenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They only need to see that you do have the driving capability by looking at your license. There is no license scanning or any other checks performed by the car rental agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Many Times Can International License be Used?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You are allowed to use your home country driving license in the USA only once if you are staying in the USA for the long term. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you ever got a US driving license from any state in the past, then you are expected to use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should renew your US driving license on time and get a new one if you move to a different state as per their rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have New York&#8217;s driving license and it has now expired. You cannot use your valid Indian license to drive in New York or any other state now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you move to a new state like MA, which allows you to drive up-to 6 months with an Indian license, you need to get an MA license now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are pulled over by police, you will face penalties since you held New York state&#8217;s license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do States Share Driving History Data?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many states do not share their driving license history with other states automatically. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an example, Texas and Oklahoma do not have any contract to share their driving tickets and history data at this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that a traffic violation ticket issued in Oklahoma will not show up on Texas DMV records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"ma__comp-heading wp-block-heading\">Avoid License Scams<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many sites that sell documents as &#8216;International Driver Licenses&#8217; and &#8216;International Driving Permits&#8217; and claim to give you a driving license. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay away from them as they are not legal licenses and you are not allowed to use them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only two agencies designated by the US to issue international driving permits (IDP) are<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaa.com\/vacation\/idpf.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Automobile Association (AAA)&nbsp;International Driving License<\/a><\/li><li>American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA) IDP license.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your IDP is a valid form of identification in 150 countries worldwide and contains your name, photo, and driver information. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IDP is recommended if you are traveling to Europe, China, or Indian from the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can get an international license from your own country before traveling to the US.
